World Bird Wednesday - Common Bronzewing

This rather plump looking pigeon is a Common Bronzewing – which just goes to show that ‘common’ in the name does not always mean dull or uninteresting.
I was pleased with this picture because the first thing you see of these birds is normally their rump disappearing into the distance. They tend to sit tight as you approach and then burst with surprising speed from cover. The moment they land, they disappear! This one was looking round the edge of a camp fire for scraps, so I think that’s why I was able to get within lens range.

Not sure what’s going on in the background – maybe a small earthquake that I was unaware of!

You can find more birds from around the world at World Bird Wednesday.

You can also see the most recent post on my other blog by clicking the Paying Ready Attention picture on the RHS of the screen.

Enjoy the birds.

  1. Haha! I tend to visit earthquake-prone areas too!!! But it didn't affect the detail - which is all too rare ...

Did you hear about the 1st ever sighting of a hoopoe in OZ up in Broome last week??

  8. Nice photo of the Common Bronzewing. It always surprises me how such birds can disappear when you are watching them so closely!

  11. Stewart, your's is so much more splendid than the Brush bronzewing we have in our Mt.Lofty garden but by the sound of it, just as elusive. They look so like our drive-way that they are invisible until they zip away.
    A really lucky capture.

  12. What a beautiful bird Stewart.

The sudden flight reminds of what the Pheasant does; they always scare the life out of me when they do that! lol

  14. is that a pigeon? Looks great to me. And from its coloring I see what you mean when you say it disappears on ground. Glad you got the shot. :)
